Automatic ultrasonic system for NDT inspections of heat exchangers: IBW welds and fillet welds on tube sheets

HI-SCAN is a specialized ultrasonic system designed and developed by IMG Ultrasuoni for non-destructive testing of heat exchangers. It is designed to efficiently support inspections of internal bore welds (IBW) and fillet welds on tube sheets, with a workflow aimed at speeding up the inspection process and reducing the need for radiation-based techniques.

Examples of use:

  • Inspection of IBW (Internal Bore Welding) welds on heat exchangers
  • Inspection of fillet welds on tube sheets
  • NDT Inspections of heat exchangers for the following industries: Fertilizers, Heat Boilers, Gas, Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

The system consists of:

  • Dedicated ultrasonic instrument, designed and manufactured for inspection
  • Multi-axis robot for helical scanning with:
    • fixed pitch 0,5 mm
    • maximum scanning range/depth: 30 mm
    • probe holder
  • Automatic system for injecting water directly into the pipe to be inspected
  • Control unit for material handling, programmable via dedicated software
  • Dual-crystal probes designed to suit the type of welding and control requirements
  • Automatic scanning with a fixed-pitch helical path to standardize data collection
  • Instant analysis reports “in just a few steps”
  • A solution designed to improve productivity during heat exchanger inspections

IMG also offers boreprobes for various NDT applications, including:

  • Manual boreprobe for inspecting railway axles, with two 45° angled probes and water injection (2-meter rod)
  • Manual boreprobe for submersion testing, with 5 angled probes for a 45° angle
  • Manual boreprobe for inspecting IBW welds on heat exchangers (compatible with any UT instrument)
