Precision processing for artificial indicators on NDT test blocks

NDT systems that operate on the principle of comparison require calibration before the inspection of the workpiece can be performed. For this reason, standard blocks with artificial reference marks and known dimensions are used. Increasingly, however, these components have geometries and dimensions that are difficult to achieve using traditional mechanical processes.

To meet these needs, we are equipped with a CNC machining center for EDM operations. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non-conventional machining process that takes place without direct contact between the tool and the workpiece during material removal: it enables high-precision machining with high aspect ratios, produces burr-free results, and is not dependent on the mechanical properties of the material being machined.

  • Custom-designed shapes and cross-sections
  • Flat-bottom holes (FBH)
  • Round-bottom holes (RBH)
  • Lateral holes (SDH)
  • Operations can be performed on any conductive material, regardless of its shape or stage of processing
  • Possibility of machining with dimensional accuracy of 0.1–0.2 mm, very tight tolerances and high-quality surface finishes
  • It can also be used in hard-to-reach areas (e.g., the inner surface of pipes) without the need to disassemble the component or perform additional machining
  • Performing surface machining on a weld
